It was September 2001. We all know what happened that fateful month. I had just started my own City IT Recruitment company so, when there was a market collapse in the City, off shoring to the sub continent, the collapse of Enron (and then Andersen Consulting), like now, a recession in banking all came together...it was the "perfect storm" for my company! I’m sure you can guess what happened....
Rather than having lots of money, I lost an awful lot of money - and I was suddenly in debt. A frighteningly large amount in debt. The worst thing I have ever had to do is to put two close friends out of work. I really can’t tell you how much that hurt. The looks on their faces when I told them the company was going under and that they would not be paid that month. It was, without doubt, the worst day of my life.
Who was I...? I was in my early 40’s, had generated huge success, but all of a sudden, I was worse than broke and, as the saying goes, “down on my luck”. I could either crumble and cave in, or I could get up and fight back. It’s a truism, that the one thing failure can’t live with is persistence. So I got up! Very slowly at first, but I got up.
What was it I going to do...? and how was I going to get myself back to where I wanted to be. I had to be prepared for a long hard fight, that’s for sure. One thing I did realise in those dark days was that all the PMA (Positive Mental Attitude) I had read, whilst making me feel better, if I was brutally honest, it didn’t really help me other than making me feel like I wanted to fight back. And fight back I did.....
There had to be another key that made everything work. That could give me the control I needed to get me earning again. The first thing I decided was that I didn’t want to touch recruitment with the proverbial barge pole - ever again. I made a list of characteristics my new business would have to satisfy….
My learning curve was incredible. The “to do” list was overwhelming, and here I was again, fighting to set up something and fighting a losing battle against time. After all, at my age, time was not on my side any more!
Therefore, I had no option but to find a way to gain control. It’s amazing what can happen when you truly dedicate yourself to achieving something, when you make a real QUALITY decision that something just HAS to happen.

I read your book in just one evening and the following Monday evening, whilst somewhat sceptical, I spent half an hour putting together my daily time analysis. Interesting and very worthwhile read.
I am self-employed and time is money. The business has been very tough to establish but I've seen a vast improvement since I've started to adopt a more structure approach to my days thanks to reading 'Total Control'.
